Healthcare AI Lab

Penn Medicine Princeton Health

Principal Investigator: Jonathan S. H. Woo, MD

Chair, Department of Medicine, Penn Medicine Princeton Health

University of Pennsylvania Health System

Our lab is at the forefront of advancing Generative AI and multi-agent systems for healthcare. Dr. Woo developed the MATEC Framework (Multi-AI Agent Team Care)—an innovative architecture that enables coordinated decision-making across multiple intelligent agents, designed to simulate and support complex, team-based clinical care.

We combine these next-generation AI approaches with applied research in predictive modeling and precision medicine, particularly for hospitalized patients. Our models help anticipate postoperative complications, and other acute risks using electronic health records and genomic data.

Research Focus

  1. Generative AI & Multi-Agent Collaboration
Creating AI agents that communicate, reason, and collaborate to support clinical teams—bridging the gap between AI and real-world care coordination.

  2. Predictive Models for Acute Care
Designing interpretable risk models for early detection of complications in medical and surgical settings.

  3. Data-Driven Health System Innovation
Leveraging big data and machine learning to build tools that enhance decision-making, improve outcomes, and integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows.
